Why Bake Your Dog's Treats at Home?

Your dog can smell what you're baking from three rooms away. Imagine what fresh-baked treats do to their tail.

Most store-bought dog treats share something in common: a shelf life measured in months, sometimes years. That longevity doesn't come from magic — it comes from preservatives, stabilizers, and ingredients you'd need a chemistry degree to pronounce. BHA, BHT, propylene glycol, artificial color additives. They keep treats shelf-stable, but they're not things you'd choose to feed your dog if you had a better option.

More and more pet parents are deciding they do have a better option.

The case for homemade

When you bake your dog's treats at home, you control exactly what goes in them. No fillers. No artificial anything. Just real, recognizable ingredients — oats, peanut butter, chia seeds — that you'd be comfortable reading on a label. And because they're baked fresh, they don't need preservatives to last. They won't last long anyway, because your dog will make sure of that!

There's also something that happens when you make something for someone you love. Even if that someone has four legs and is mostly interested in the end result. The process matters. The smell of oats and peanut butter filling your kitchen matters. Watching your dog's nose twitch from the other room as they figure out something good is coming — that matters.

But I'm not a baker...

You don't need to be. That's exactly why we built Scratch Treats. Each kit includes every dry ingredient you need, pre-measured and ready to go. You add water, roll the dough, cut out your shapes with the included cutter, and bake for about 20 minutes. That's it. No measuring cups, no trips to the store for specialty ingredients, no guesswork.

One kit makes approximately 90 treats. That's a lot of tail wags.

The family part

This is one of the few kitchen activities where young kids can genuinely help at almost every stage — pouring, mixing, rolling, cutting. And when the treats come out of the oven and the dog goes absolutely wild for them, that payoff is something kids remember. It turns a Wednesday afternoon into a memory.

It's also how Scratch Treats started. Our founder Tyler was in the kitchen one afternoon with his daughter, trying to find a simpler way to bake cute dog treats. He couldn't find one. So he made one.

Every kit gives back

A portion of every Scratch Treats sale goes directly to Project POOCH, a non-profit that pairs youth in the justice system with shelter dogs. The dogs learn to trust humans again. The young people learn responsibility, patience, and a skill. It's a second chance for both. Read their story here.
